Find Your North Star
The compass was invented approximately 2000 years ago.
This was an important advancement in navigation because it allowed sailors to determine their direction even if clouds obscured astronomical points, such as the North Star.
With a compass in hand, explorers had a guarantee that even if they got lost, they possessed a tool to help them find their way home.
Self-mastery is our compass.
It’s singular purpose is to tell us which direction we should be heading. It points us toward our North Star and guides us on this journey called life. It is always inside us and is personalized to help us achieve our dreams and desires.
What happens when we don’t have a compass to guide us?
If we find ourselves without a compass, we might rely on someone else to point us in the right direction. Perhaps they pull out a map and tell us where to go, what to do, and how to think. This can be a relief at first. It’s easy to let someone else take the lead.
Eventually, after following someone else for a while, we will look up and say, “This isn’t where I wanted to go. This isn’t what I wanted to do.” And we realize that we’ve been traveling someone else’s journey instead of our own.
A wrong turn is not a dead end.
Once we understand how our own compass works, we can set out on a new adventure. Whenever we find ourselves alone and without direction, we have self-mastery to put us back on track. Knowing who we are and what we want is our North Star. Once we know our direction, we can take action that moves us toward our goals.
Self-mastery allows us the confidence and freedom to enjoy the journey, because even when the chaos of life overwhelms us, self-mastery will help us find our way back home.
