My Thoughtfully Selfish Rolemodel

Last week I went to see a dermatologist.

I made the appointment nine months ago.  That’s the first appointment I could snag and luckily, I did not have an emergent need.

The purpose of this visit was to conduct an overall skin check and establish a relationship with this new doctor. 

Remember the adage:  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

As I near the big five-oh, prevention is at the top of my to-do list.  And I have my mother to thank as a role model.

My mom is 74-years young and the most active person I know.  On any given day she can be found hiking, biking, kayaking, golfing, bowling, or attending yoga class at the YMCA.

Mom is also an avid traveler.  If she is not on an airplane off to some foreign country, then she is on a bus tour to watch a play or view a site of historical significance.

Last month mom celebrated a milestone – 10 years breast cancer free.  My mom had breast and thyroid cancer.  Both were caught early, so she has been able to enjoy a full and energetic life this last decade and counting.

With mom’s example in mind, I have annual dates with various doctors to make sure I continue to live a full and energetic life for as long as possible.

Taking care of our health is the most Thoughtfully Selfish thing we can do. 

We must put ourselves at the top of our to-do list.  Our lives - literally - depend on it. 

Self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and glasses of wine at the end of a tough day.  Monitoring our health is crucial to enjoying a happy, fulfilling life.
