Time is the Coin of Life

“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.”   - Carl Sandburg

Time is top of mind for me because two life events converged last week.  I celebrated a birthday and had to say goodbye to my beloved dog, Scout.

Scout gave us seventeen wonderful years.  She traveled with us.  She became my surrogate child when I was going through fertility treatments.  She was a walking partner and nighttime spooner.

I was 31 years old when we got Scout.  I think back to all the things I have accomplished (and all the things I have yet to accomplish) and am dumbfounded at how time flies.

If time is the coin of life, we better identify how we want to spend it, so that it best serves us.

          - Do we spend our time on achieving other people’s dreams, or our own?

          - Do we spend our time trying to make other people happy, or ourselves?

          - Do we spend our time wishing things were different, or changing things for                      the better?

Losing Scout has provoked me to think about what I want my next seventeen years to look like.

          - Who do I want to be?

          - What do I want to do?

          - How do I want to live?

We can’t make more time, so invest it wisely.

Where are you spending your time?  What needs to change?
