Two Rules of Self Care
Sunday, I did something out of the ordinary.
Nothing.
Seriously. I didn’t even change out of my pajamas. Didn’t shower. Just sat on the couch and read my Kindle.
That was not my intention. Sunday is normally the day I set myself up for the week. I make a hearty breakfast, do laundry, prepare my grocery list, and shop for the week. This time of year, raking leaves is also on the agenda.
I did none of it.
When I got hungry for lunch, I opened a can of tuna. When I realized it was dinner time, I opened a box of Kraft macaroni and cheese. It was glorious.
Self-Care Rule #1 – Be Mindful of Your Needs
I could have pushed through the subtle hints. I could have forced myself to stick to the schedule. I am glad I didn’t “power through.” Clearly, my body and my mind just needed to check out for a while. It is important to be aware of our needs and heed the call.
Now, there are consequences to taking this time for ourselves. The items on the schedule still need to be accomplished. So, I had to make time on Monday to do the laundry. I was able to get to the grocery store yesterday. And my weekly message is coming to you on Wednesday, instead of Tuesday.
It’s okay. I have plenty of clean underwear. My pantry is stocked full of food. And my message is still being delivered in a timely fashion.
Self-Care Rule #2 – Honor Your Choice to Put SELF First
It is very easy to beat yourself up after the fact, as you play catch-up with your to-do list. Be careful not to shame yourself for taking the time you needed. There is no reason to feel guilty. You deserved the break. You are worthy of self-care.
People pleasers are extremely conscientious people. We define our value by being dependable and focused. Usually, we are focused on everyone and everything else, not ourselves.
Give yourself permission to be conscientious about self-care. YOU are the most important thing on your to-do list.
What is your body and mind telling you? How can your show yourself some love this week?
